Lock in a new name with expanding retrieval
Recall someone's name at growing intervals right after meeting them to make it stick.

Steps
- When introduced, repeat the name back once out loud: 'Nice to meet you, Maria.'
- Silently retrieve the name a few seconds later, then again after about a minute.
- Retrieve it again after a few minutes, then once more before you part ways.
- Stretch each gap longer than the last rather than cramming repeats together.

Ask follow-up questions to be more likable
People who ask more questions, especially follow-ups, are better liked in conversation.

- Treat your goal as learning about the other person, not performing.
- After they answer, ask a question that builds directly on what they just said.
- Aim for genuine follow-ups ('What was that like?') rather than switching topics.
- Keep the back-and-forth going instead of waiting for your turn to talk.

Make people feel understood with active listening
Paraphrase, ask, and withhold advice so the other person feels genuinely heard.

- Find someone you'd like to get closer to and set aside 20-45 uninterrupted minutes in person.
- Take turns answering the questions, both of you responding to each one.

Start a small conversation with a stranger

- Stay curious and let a short exchange unfold rather than forcing it.

Trust that you're more liked than you feel
After conversations people usually underestimate how much the other person liked them.

- Treat that judgment as biased, not as evidence of how it actually went.
- Assume the other person likely enjoyed it more than your inner critic claims.

Boothby and colleagues found a persistent 'liking gap': people systematically underestimate how much conversation partners liked them, and shyer people underestimate it most.
Apologize for things that aren't your fault
A brief 'sorry' for bad luck (rain, a delay) signals empathy and builds trust.
Steps
- Notice a shared inconvenience the other person is facing that you didn't cause.
- Lead with a short superfluous apology: 'I'm so sorry about the rain.'
- Let it land as a signal of empathic concern before making any request.
- Keep it genuine and brief, not a substitute for a real apology when you are at fault.
Why it works
Brooks and colleagues found that apologizing for circumstances outside your control demonstrates empathic concern and increases trust; in a field study it sharply raised strangers' willingness to lend a phone.
Good to know: This is about empathy for shared bad luck, not for masking blame; overusing 'sorry' for things you didn't do can read as a verbal tic.
