PlayMemorize N-back is a free implementation of the dual n-back / letter n-back task, the gold-standard working-memory paradigm used in cognitive neuroscience research. A stream of letters appears one at a time. You tap "Match" whenever the current letter is the same as the one shown N steps ago.
Adjustable N. Start at 1-back to learn the rhythm, then move up to 2-back, 3-back, or 4-back. Each extra level dramatically increases cognitive load.
Session scoring. Each round runs a fixed number of trials, with around 30% of them planted matches. Your score is the percentage of hits minus false alarms, following the standard d-prime-style scoring used in research.
Part of the PlayMemorize family of free brain-training games.
Q: What is the n-back task?
The n-back task is a continuous performance test where you see a stream of items and must press a button when the current item matches the one shown N positions earlier. It was introduced by Kirchner (1958) and is widely used in working-memory research.
Q: Does n-back training improve intelligence?
The evidence is mixed. Some studies (Jaeggi et al. 2008) show transfer to fluid intelligence; others find only task-specific improvement. What is certain is that n-back is an excellent measure of working-memory capacity.
Q: Which N level should I start at?
Start with 1-back to understand the format, then move to 2-back. 2-back is the research standard and already quite demanding. 3-back and 4-back are for experienced players.
Q: Is it free?
Yes, completely free. No account, no ads. Your best score per N-level is saved locally in your browser.
