About Instrument Assembly
Instrument Assembly shows a landmark instrument of science, redrawn as simplified line art from the real historical publication or patent. The drawing comes apart, and you drag each loose piece home.
The instruments are Huygens’ pendulum clock, Hooke’s microscope, Newton’s reflecting telescope, Moxon’s common printing press and Edison’s phonograph.
Every instrument cites its actual source (the clock from Horologium Oscillatorium, 1673; the microscope from Micrographia, 1665; the phonograph from U.S. Patent 200,521, 1878), and the reveal shows the citation · a museum tour, one missing piece at a time.
Every round is generated deterministically from a seed. Runs entirely in your browser and works offline as a Progressive Web App.
FAQ
-
Where do the instrument drawings come from?
Each one is redrawn from the real historical source: Huygens’ Horologium Oscillatorium (1673), Hooke’s Micrographia (1665), Newton’s 1672 reflecting-telescope paper in the Philosophical Transactions, Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises (1683) and Edison’s 1878 phonograph patent. The reveal cites the source every round. -
How do I pick the right piece?
The missing part is shown as a dashed outline in the instrument. Match its shape and position against the detached piece options · pendulum, eyepiece, platen, crank · and tap the one that fits. -
What does this train?
Part-whole visual reasoning and a working picture of how landmark instruments are put together · which piece does what, and where it sits. -
