About Front Lines

Front Lines is a short strategy campaign on a world map. You start with one territory. The enemy starts with one territory, far away. All the ground between you is free. Thirty turns decide who holds more of it.

Two points each turn. You choose what each point buys. An offense point adds one soldier to a territory you hold. A defense point builds a wall between two territories. Put both points in one place, or split them. That choice is the heart of the game.

Read the odds first. You can make one attack each turn. Select a territory, and each neighbour shows your chance to take it. With no wall, one soldier against one soldier gives an even chance. More soldiers move the odds your way. The game holds every chance between 5 and 95 percent.

A wall holds a border. A wall multiplies the defence by a factor of 1.2 for the defender. Two walls thus give the defender 1.44 times the defence. A wall sits between two squares. It never moves after you place it. It falls with the territory behind it.

What a loss costs. A failed attack costs one soldier, not your full army. You can thus push the same border again next turn. A successful attack moves your force into the new territory. It also tears down the walls on that border.

The enemy. One opponent plays by your rules, at three skill levels. It walls the border you threaten most. It reinforces the territory it wants to attack from. Then it takes the best attack that clears its nerve. It reads only the board that you also see.

Part of the PlayMemorize family of games. It runs in your browser, and it works offline as a Progressive Web App.

FAQ

  • How do the attack odds work?

Your territory commits each soldier above the one that must stay home. The defender counts their soldiers. That count multiplies by 1.2 for each wall on the border you cross. Your chance is the attack divided by the attack plus the defence. With no wall, one soldier against one soldier gives an even chance. The game holds the odds between 5 and 95 percent, so no position is hopeless.
  • What does a wall actually do?

A wall gives the defender 20 percent more defence · a multiply by 1.2, not an addition of 20 percentage points. Walls on the same border stack, so two walls give 1.44 times the defence. A wall sits between two squares, it can never move, and it comes down when the territory behind it falls.
  • How long is a campaign?

Thirty turns. The side with more territory at the end wins, and total soldiers break a tie. If either side loses each territory before then, the campaign ends at once.
  • Can I attack more than once in a turn?

No. Each side makes at most one attack for each turn. The choice of which border to push is thus the decision that matters. You can still spend both points before you attack.
  • Is the map real?

It is the same world map the PlayMemorize Geography game draws, simplified to a 12 by 12 board of 79 land territories. Every territory connects to the rest by land, so no side can hide on an island.
  • Can MemPi help me study and practice this game?

Yes! Click MemPi in the header or on the game board to summon him. He observes the board, thinks out loud, and can demonstrate moves or guide you through tricky steps.
