Power Law
Scatter plots without a trendline · judge whether real observations follow a power law or another distribution
Metabolic Rate vs Body Mass in Animals
Energy consumption measured across mammals ranging from mice to elephants.
About Power Law
Power Law tests your intuition for mathematical patterns in nature and society.
Each round shows a scatter plot of real data without a trend line. You decide if the points follow a power law or another curve.
Power laws govern planetary orbits, city populations, word counts, and computer networks. Other phenomena follow exponential decay, normal bell curves, or flat uniform rates.
You can toggle to a log-log scale. If the points form a straight line, the data is a power law.
Correct answers increase your streak score. After each choice, the game shows the mathematical formula and explains the physics.

FAQ
-
What is a power law?
A power law is a mathematical relationship where one value varies as a power of another value. -
Why do power laws matter?
Power laws govern natural systems. They appear in earthquakes, planetary orbits, animal metabolic rates, and computer networks. -
How does the log-log scale help?
A power law becomes a straight line on a log-log plot. You can see true power laws immediately on log-log axes. -
Are the data points based on real measurements?
Yes. All data points reflect real scientific research, from planetary distances to Bitcoin market cycle history. -
Does the game work offline?
Yes. PlayMemorize is a Progressive Web App that works offline without an active network connection. -
Can MemPi help me study and practice this game?
Yes! Click MemPi in the header or on the game board to summon him. He observes the board, thinks out loud, and can demonstrate moves or guide you through tricky steps.
