How it works

A coordinate has two parts: latitude (north-south) and longitude (east-west). DD writes each as a single decimal. DMS breaks each into degrees, minutes, and seconds: 1° = 60' = 3600". The hemisphere letter sets the sign · N/E positive, S/W negative.
